The Chive the website that has one of the most well known hashtags and fun to; write, say, and invent new ways to make the “Keep Calm and ______” into funny statements (Oh and not to mention funny stories and images, and a plethora of photos of scantily clad ladies) has done a really cool thing through their charity organization Chive Charities.
Yesterday we posted the story of Melissa Smith. Melissa survived Hodgkins Lymphoma twice only to be stricken with a rare disease called Transverse Myelitis, an extremely rare neurological disease in which your immune system attacks your spinal cord. She was left paralyzed from the waist down.
I asked Chive Nation to match our $50,000 donation. We launched Melissa’s story and I went across the street to get a coffee – I don’t sleep much in the days leading up to our charity launches and I just needed some caffeine. When I returned to my desk, I refreshed the page – $20,000?? Could that be right?? The hashtag #wegotyoumelissa began to spread on Twitter like wildfire

It’s now over $385,000!
An incredible and wonderful outpour of good Samaritans donated to Melissa. The once hope of raising enough funds to put as a down payment on an accessible house, has turned into a solid knowledge that her needs will be met. This is such a great feel good story and is so cool to see this.
This story is also my personal favorite feel good story because I remember receiving a personal message from Melissa’s sister Stephanie Smith last May. In it, she was looking to reach out to find a way that Melissa can connected into the community but most importantly to share her story and her endeavors to try to raise money to get her apartment to be more accessible.
I had the opportunity to see first hand how much love and dedication she had for her sister Melissa, and I followed her Facebook posts with her fundraisers she put on for Melissa and I was amazed by the sisterly love.
To see Stephanie’s push to get help for her sister has culminated to touching the lives of many people around the Chive Nation and everywhere else! And of course, fulfilling her mission.
I took a screen shot of a comment on one of the many donor’s (On the Left) to show how Melissa’s story touched them or cheering her on. See her GoFundMe.com page HERE
Keep Calm And Chive On Indeed! Congratulations Stephanie & Melissa and God Bless!
