Nicole Spain – Congenital Limb Loss
My name is Nicole Spain and I am 25 years old. I have a congenital limb loss of my left arm just below the elbow. I grew up like any other child, riding bikes, playing soccer, painting my own nails, and playing video games with my brothers. As a child my parents tried to get prosthetics made for me but I always felt like I functioned better without them. I’ve always been able to find a way to accomplish physical tasks just as well as others but of course in my own way. I am able to work out regularly, drive a manual transmission car, and am even able to help others for a living working as a caregiver in my community. I am in the process of advancing my nursing career and currently attend school. I live in Hemet, CA with my fiancé. We are to be married this fall. My motto is if there is a will and a desire to do something there is a way. I may do things a little different but I can honestly say that everything and anything is possible and there is nothing that I can’t do.

Keith McPherson – T12 Paraplegic
Faithful, fervent, and focused. As “ACool Nerd” I like to take advantage of all that life has to offer. I put fourth a great effort in my work & equally (okay, okay, maybe a little more effort goes into the enjoying life) so do I put in an effort to living life and having fun. Fortunate that being ‘Cool’ is just me I like to focus my energy on other things that I feel can help me to help others. I spend most of my days in front of a computer developing something for someone and most other days you’ll find me working on my recovery.
At the end of 2006 I decided it would be cool to got ATV riding. Being that I have to be the cool guy I decided to buy an ATV spur of the moment and it needed to be as good if no better than my friends. Although I had never rode before (nor did I even really know how to change gears) I went fourth to buy a “Yamaha 4 barrel banshee with Nos”. After riding around all day I decided that I would end the day off by trying a jump. I position myself and send my friend to the top of a dune to look over and make sure I don’t land on anyone.
I hit the gas and Im off 20, 30, 40…. by the time I catapulted off the top of the dune I was doing close to 70MPH. Not knowing that you are suppose to pump the gas while in the air to keep the front up I ending up coming down FROM 35 to40 FEET in the air and landing dead on the front tires. The Nos actually saved my life as its what my face bounced off as I shattered my helmet.
It’s one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I went from ‘Living Life Fast” to “LIVING LIFE” . Now recovering is a process that is teaching me more lessons than I could have imagined. I own and operate a digital strategy, marketing, and social/wen development company by the name of ‘ACool Nerd” because at the end of the day I am Where I work.
